Film Developing

Film Developing

Black and White

This is a slightly modified version of a stand-developing recipe recieved from Adam Paul. I have changed the developer concentration to suit my personal preference and modified rinse times mainly due to laziness. I typically store and reuse fixer for two weeks, though I have accidentally used three-week old solution with no problems.

Needed Supplies

Developing tank (Anscomatic, Yankee Master, System3)
Developer (Kodak HC-110)
Fixer: Illford Rapid Fixer)
Large Measuring cup: 16 or 32 oz
Small measuring cup: at least 1 oz capacity with ml markings
Storage container for leftover fixer
Funnel

Process
1. IN COMPLETE DARKNESS, Load film into developing reel/tank (this is the hardest part).
2. Pre-soak film with water for two minutes.
3. Mix 6.5 ml of HC-110 developer with every 16 ounces of water needed for your tank (water temp should be tepid to luke warm)
4. Pour out the pre-soak, and add the developer. Agitate for 20 seconds, then tap the tank sharply on the counter two or three times to dislodge any air bubbles.
5. Set a timer for 15 minutes… have a beer.
6. After 15 minutes, agitatate the tank for 45 seconds, then tap the tank sharply on the counter two or three times to dislodge any air bubbles.
7. Set a timer for 15 minutes… have another beer.
8. After 15 minutes, pour the developer down the drain, it will not be re-used.
9. Rinse the tank with 16, or however many you used, ounces of water for one minute.
10. Mix 3.2 ounces of Illford Rapid Developer with every 16 ounces of water needed for your tank.
11. Pour fixer into tank, set a timer for 5 minutes.
12. After 5 minutes, pour fixer into a non-reactive container for later re-use.
13. Remove top from tank and rinse developed negatives in cold water for 5 minutes.
14. Squeegee, Dry, Scan, and enjoy.

Color

I have yet to develop color negatives. My plan is to use C-41 chemicals with stand development. Once a recipe that produces consistent results is found, I will post details here.
